The White Mountains are located
in northern New Hampshire; about a three hour drive from Boston.
|
 |
The highest peak in the White Mountains
is Mount Washington. Unlike most mountains, this one
has an Auto-Road that you can drive all the way to the
very top. |
 |
Unfortunately, the auto-road has
neither guard-rails nor a berm. One false move will
will send you over the edge, and it's a long
way to the bottom. |
 |
The tree-line on the east coast can be
as low as 5,000 feet, which is very different from
the western mountains. The top of Mount Washington
is covered in nothing but moss and rocks.
|
 |
When you reach the summit, you are typically
above the clouds. For scale, note the white tour van
driving back down the auto-road.

A Mount Washington panorama. Notice the
fuel tanks in the center of the picture, (each one
bigger than a semi-truck). The auto-road is too
dangerous for deliveries during the winter. However,
since a broadcast tower and a weather station are kept
open all year round, it is necessary to stock-pile fuel.
